Greek Profile: Chi Omega

By Hanna Ackerman

1) What are the basic principles or values of Chi O?

The basic values of Chi Omega are our six purposes, which are friendship, high standards of personnel, sincere learning and creditable scholarship, participation in campus activities, career development, and community service. All of these ideals are the basic tenets that Chi O’s live by both on campus and on a daily basis.

2) What philanthropies do you support?

We support the Make-a-Wish Foundation, a National philanthropy that grants wishes to children who are terminally ill. The foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes, and we support making a wish come true every year through our Mr. Fraternity competition. We also support Survivors of Adams County, a women’s shelter that provides support to women in the area and their families. On campus, we support the Growing Place and hold an annual treasure hunt with the children.

3) How long has Chi Omega been at Gettysburg College, how long nationally? Who was your founder?

Chi O has been at Gettysburg since 1937. Our founders were Dr. Charles Richardson and 5 young women who wanted to start a women’s fraternity with ideals that they could be proud to stand by.

4) What kind of qualities do Chi Omega girls have?

Chi Omega girls are sincere and genuine. We are exactly how you see us- considerate, involved, respectful to each other and our peers, and focused on our academics. We like to have fun and spend time with each other, but most importantly, Chi Omegas are role models to their peers and respected by professors, coaches, and each other.

5) What is your favorite part of Greek Life on campus?

My favorite part of Greek Life on campus is the overall feeling of being involved in something not only positively effecting our college campus, but also something that is recognized nationally as philanthropic and working together to better our communities.

6) Do you have any upcoming events for this semester that you’d like to share?

While our date for Mr. Fraternity is not finalized, it will be either November 7th or 14th. We are hoping to make this year’s event bigger and better than in the past and hope to change a child’s life by granting their wish this winter. Last year we granted a wish to a little boy who wanted to be a guest on “Wheel of Fortune,” and hearing his story motivated us to work even harder to continue to make Mr. Fraternity the most successful philanthropic event on the Gettysburg College campus.
