Greek Profile: Sigma Nu

By Hanna Ackerman

Answers from Matty Heiser,
Social Chair, Sigma Nu, Zeta Sigma chapter

1. When and how did Sigma Nu come to GettysburgCollege?
Sigma Nu originated from three college organizations; The Star Club, The Criterion Club, and Phi Kappa Rho. The organization became recognized by the national fraternity Sigma Nu in 1954.

2. What are the qualities that exemplify Sig Nu on campus?
The values of Sigma Nu are Love, Honor, and Truth. We truly hold our values in high regard and live by these ideals so as to be an influence to all whom we encounter. We are the smallest and most intimate brotherhood on campus, making us a very tight-knit group. Also, with the implementation of our new Strategic Plan, we have also become focused on academic excellence and being influential members of our campus and local community.

3. Do you have any upcoming events this semester?
For the upcoming semester we will be hosting our annual Polar Bear Run to benefit the American Cancer Society. We will also be hosting our first annual Brian Lovett Memorial Flag Football Tournament later this spring.

4. What have been some of the fraternity’s greatest successes?
Our greatest success is the addition of our Fall pledge class of 8 new brothers. We are the new leaders of the organization and taking it in many new exciting places to help benefit ourselves and the college community. We are also proud of the success of our Juniors and Seniors as they have helped us adapt into our fraternity, our new House Corps. President and recent alumni Josh Rogers, and our reconnection to many other alumni; and of course we love our castle of a house.

5. What are the characteristics of a typical Sig Nu brother?
A Sig Nu brother can really fit many different characteristics. We have many brothers who are campus leaders in many different roles. We pride ourselves not on what our members have on their resumes, but by our ties of true and lasting friendship. Sigma Nu is characterized by the ideals of our fraternity to become better men and to improve the community we live in. We live by the philosophy that it is not the number of Brothers in our Fraternity, but the Fraternity within our Brothers.

6. What is the average GPA of Sig Nu and what are it’s most prevalent majors?
This past semester we tied for second highest GPA on campus with an over 2.97 GPA. We have quiet a few major including English, History, Economics, Political Science, Management, Classical Studies and Environmental Studies. We are also very proud of our new Scholarship Policy which will help brothers stay on track with our academic endeavors.

7. Do you have any advice to someone thinking of rushing?
The best advice I can offer is to get to know as many brotherhoods as possible. If you never thought you would ever want to go Greek, I strongly recommend getting to know some fraternities and sororities and see what they are like. There is so much that Greek life has to offer for many students, they just need to break stereotypes and see if it might be for them. As an employee of Safety and Security, I only saw the negative image of Greek life last year. I got to know Greeks not for their parties, but for the people who they are. They are some of my best friends and mentors in life. If you want to see what Sigma Nu or any other Greek organization is really like, have one of us show you; I think a lot of people will be surprised.

8. If Sig Nu had an honorary little sister, who would she be? *wink wink nudge nudge*
It would have to be Hanna Ackerman. We really do love everybody who supports us!

Oh, stop it. Flatterer.
