Greek Profile: Tri Sigma

By The Forum Staff

How long has Tri-Sigma been a part of the Gettysburg College campus?
We were on campus during the 1980s, and then we came back on again as a chapter in 2003, so we’re still trying to reestablish ourselves as a sorority on campus.

What are some unique aspects of the Tri-Sigma sorority?
Tri Sigma has had the highest GPA among all of the sororities on campus for several years. We are also known as the small sorority, but that’s just makes us a super tight group. We spend a lot of time outside of the sorority hanging out and having fun.

What kinds of activities do you do to help the campus community, or simply help others?
Tri Sigma participates in most of the big events on campus, whether it be other Greek philanthropy events or otherwise. Our most recent event we’re taking part in is St. Jude’s Up Till Dawn. We feel that by taking part in so many of these events, we help the campus community, as well as enhance Greek unity. We also do our own philanthropy events. Our philanthropy motto is “Sigma Serves Children,” so our proceeds go to play therapy for hospitalized children. Some of the events we hold to raise money for these children are Twister with a Twist, Jail and Bail, and Lincoln Exchange. Another event we do is Project Linus, where we spend the whole day making blankets for children.

What is your favorite Tri-Sigma activity? Why?
My favorite Tri Sigma activity would definitely have to be our Annual Sisterhood Retreat at National Headquarters in Virginia. Our Headquarters is in this giant house that was owned by one of our former National Presidents, so it’s gorgeous and it has a lot of history. I know it sounds cheesy, but we do a bunch of sisterhood activities and a lot of bonding goes on there. We always have such a blast.

Do you have any fond memories you would like to share?
Last year, on the day before Project Linus, we had a sleepover in the sorority suite. We played some games and stayed up late talking about the most random things. It was so much fun, and then to top it all off, our then-Vice President made us eggs, pancakes, and biscuits for breakfast!

Do you feel that your membership in the Tri-Sigma sorority has changed you? Helped you? If so, how?
Yeah, I feel as though I’ve changed for the better. I mean, I’m still the same person I always was, but I’m now much better at meeting new people and I’m less shy. I’ve become more confident in myself and I take more pride in my body. Also, being secretary last year and Vice President this year has helped me to become more organized and I have learned how to be a better leader.

Any final comments you would like to share with others regarding the sorority?
The first year and a half of my time here at Gettysburg, I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to go Greek, but I decided to give it a shot, and joining Tri Sigma was one of the best decisions of my college career. For any readers who don’t really know if it’s for you, I encourage you to at least check it out because you could miss out on what many say is a tremendous part of their lives.
