Juicy Campus Raises Issues on Campus

By Kyle Lawson
November 6, 2008

When Senate President Hugh McStravick mentioned at the beginning of the October 27 Student Senate meeting that any student who had to leave at eight was permitted to do so, but were asked to stay as long as possible senators and club representative alike realized something was up. What many probably did not expect was that Dean Ramsey would be speaking about Juicycampus.com.

A Response to Maggie Carter's Letter from President Riggs

By Janet Riggs
November 5, 2008

Dear Maggie,

I am writing in response to your letter regarding juicycampus.com.  I appreciate your willingness to take a strong stand against this website which has had the attention of many of us (students, administrators, and faculty) over the last few weeks.   All of those with whom I have talked agree that juicycampus.com is degrading, offensive, and inconsistent with our values as an institution.

Gettysburg College Condemns Juicycampus.com

By Julie Ramsey
November 5, 2008

Dear Members of the Gettysburg Community,

Over the course of the past two weeks, there have been many conversations on campus about the website juicycampus.com . This site provides a venue for anyone to anonymously post information about a particular college or university. Unfortunately, most of the people who post comments on the site focus on derogatory and salacious information about people they may or may not know.

My First Election Day: Look What Happened

By Jaclynn Cross
November 9, 2008

I woke up late on Nov. 4. I was supposed to be in Maryland by 9 a.m. and I woke at 8:30 a.m. It was my first time having to go home, to Maryland, to vote in any election, let alone the Presidential election. And in spite of my late awakening, I was excited for the day that lay ahead of me.

West Side Story Musical Review

By Amy Meros
November 11, 2008

I had very high expectations for West Side Story when I walked into the Majestic Theatre on Saturday night. This was partially because West Side Story is one of the first musicals I remember enjoying when I was younger. I also knew how talented the people involved with the Department of Theatre Arts and the Sunderman Conservatory of Music are.

For the most part, I left the Majestic as a happy critic.

Max Payne Review

By Lyle Roser
November 9, 2008

Before I begin this review, one must keep in mind the bad track record of films based on video games. Very few make the transition. However, Max Payne is different. As a fan of the series, one of its standout features is its cinematic presentation. If any game deserves to be made into a movie, it would be this one. That said, does Max Payne make the transition from video game to movie?

Post-Election Day Hurdles

Election Day—the Mecca for any campaign worker. As I stood in the Quarter in downtown Harrisburg, in a mass of Obama supporters counting down the seconds until the West Coast polls closed, I realized that this was it. After 16 months of working on this election cycle, it was amazing to know that Obama was going to be the next President of the United States.

Women’s Center’s Official Column: Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the Women’s Center

October 28, 2008

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Women’s Center has taken part in this campaign all month in order to help increase awareness on this extremely important women’s issue and, also, to help fundraise for specific non-profits dedicated to the cause.

We hope our campaign against breast cancer will extend our across campus to include students from a variety of clubs and organizations. And we will help to ensure this by devoting a high degree of effort to reach everyone.

Cindy McCain Brings out Protesters

By Owen Carhart
October 28, 2008

Cindy McCain’s visit, on Oct. 19, to campus brought out both McCain sympathizers and protesters on.

Many students must have noticed the Facebook group that announced the protest for the event. All said and done there were around 24 student protesters outside of the CUB, showing their disapproval for the McCain campaign.

While these protesters were absolutely within their rights to protest outside the CUB, my argument concerns the protesters motives rather than their rights.

Problems with the Cindy McCain Protest

By Beth Leamy
October 23, 2008

Last Sunday, an organized protest of Cindy McCain’s visit to campus was orchestrated, and I now feel it necessary to respond to a few of these student’s actions.

Before I begin, I would like to state, I do appreciate that it was the protester’s constitutional right to express their views contrary to the ones being expressed in the CUB Ballroom on Oct. 19. I believe that it was their right to organize a demonstration outside of the venue and illustrate their feelings on pertinent issues.

The Socialization of Race

Conservatism and Feminism

The People’s Voice

In this new feature, the voice of Gettysburg is finally heard, responding to questions that address the real issues of the day and age.

Barack Obama has won nine consecutive primaries, putting him in the lead for the Democratic Nomination. Is America ready for a black president?

He’s black? I only listen to the most unbiased form of media journalism, the radio. In fact, the notion that he was black had never crossed my mind. Well, the television destroyed Nixon when he debated that goodie goodie Kennedy. I think unfortunately the devil-box is at it again.
