Screams to Support Youth Services in Adams County

By Kira Nightingale

On October 27-29 Phi Delta Theta held their second annual haunted house. Armed with bloody masks, fake chainsaws and lots and lots of fake blood, the brothers opened up their house to students and members of the community. The cost was $4 for students and $5 for adults, and proceeds are to go to Adams County Children and Youth Services.
The mission of the Adams County Children and Youth Services is to ensure that all children in Adams County have safe, permanent homes, and are provided with the essentials for life. The organization is based on the core beliefs that the role of child welfare is to protect children and preserve the family unit, that children are entitled to a safe, nurturing environment, and that children do best with their own families. It also believes that prevention and education are vital to reducing the number of families at risk.
Many community members turned out, with ages ranging from elementary school students to screaming pre-teens to dedicated grandparents. Overall the house was very well done. One room was based off of The Exorcist, and another off of The Ring. There was plenty of body part removal, and smoke machines and dim lights to create the appropriate spooky mood. Despite the scary premises of each of the rooms, the house was very family-friendly, and visitors of all ages were able to enjoy it equally.
Even though the haunted house may have not been the scream-fest many students were expecting or hoping for, it was appropriate for people of all ages, which seems fitting considering the organization it was held to support.
