On Monday September 29 Kyle Bruntz and Sean Mullins, chairs of the CAB Concert committee, announced the performers for the Fall Concert. This year two headliners are confirmed: Augustana and Reel Big Fish. The concert date is set for November 8 at 7:30. Ticket sales will begin soon with student tickets priced at $20 and $21 on student charge. Tickets for the general public will be twenty-eight dollars. Which is what the prices were around last year.
Augustana was described at the press conference as having a “modern pop rock sound.” They are best known for the 2006 song ” Boston.” More recently their song “Sweet and Low” off their latest album Can’t Love Can’t Hurt, which has begun to rise on the charts. They have gone on tour with numerous bands including Cartel, The Fray, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5, and Snow Patrol.
The second band, Reel Big Fish is a ska punk band known for their 1996 song “Sell Out.” The band has maintained its popularity, releasing their fifth album Monkeys for Nothin’ and the Chimps for Free in 2007. They have just finished Warped Tour 2008, and have played with Streetlight Manifesto, Less Than Jake, and Against All Authority.
Both groups will be headlining with the possibility of an opener still out there, though they would most likely be a local band or an unknown. Augustana will open since more students are familiar with them, with the hope that they would stay for Reel Big Fish. Reel Big Fish is known for doing great stage shows and along with their own songs, play covers of songs everyone knows.
When asked about how the bands were chosen the simple answer was trial and error. The bid process for bands had begun in June with Flobots, Flo Rida, and the Campus Consciousness Tour, as well as other names passed between a few members of CAB. With lists compared before setting on just a few to send bids out too. Student reaction has been positive, though students often preference band over the other. If anyone has any suggestions for future concerts or ideas in general they are encouraged to attend CAB meetings every Monday at four in the basement of Plank Gym.
