Quarry West will be used as the new R.I.S.E. house. At the final Student Senate meeting of the semester it was revealed much to the shock of many in attendance of the future of R.I.S.E. house. As the current building use, 240 Carlisle St., will be returned to the fraternity Sigma Chi a new location needed to be found.
After discussing improved relations between off campus students and Gettysburg residents and the announcement of a new Senate position to represent those students and the Sophomore Year Initiative the announcement of the relocation of R.I.S.E. house was made. Meetings between R.I.S.E. students and the Office of Residence Life were held to name potential locations. The three potential locations included Quarry West, Carlisle House, and Lamppost.
There were four main criteria, which Quarry West fulfills including room for growth. There is lots of community space with more to be added with the removal of the Community Leader’s room. One requirement was a large number of singles, which is what 240 Carlisle street has. Finally, that it is a permanent space.
There was admittance to a change in community dynamics, with the each apartment having its own common space, and the risk of isolation. One idea had been to remove the doors leading into the individual apartments, impossible, as they are fire doors. Any room’s still available after students in the R.I.S.E. have chosen will be open to the rest of the student body, with the expectation they will abide by the R.I.S.E. rules.
Student reaction to the news has been mixed. Some have been apathetic to the idea saying, “[T]here are better places to live.” Others expressed annoyance expressing the opinions that students would join only to live in Quarry. Overall reaction has been neutral to the idea of Quarry West being the new R.I.S.E..
